“Female, Queer and Unapologetic” is how the Bristol based punks introduce themselves as they announce their new single ‘”‘Desire’, taken from their new EP ‘Who Am I’.
Immediately after the track starts, there’s something very Blinders-esq regarding the delivery of the vocals. This, for me, is a raging positive as the level of grit and “unapologetic” anger allows for a dark, twisted atmosphere as the track rings out… The lyrics themselves “I can feel them calling, the creatures of my skin” just again builds up this lexical field.
Musically, the track reminisces the likes of The Fall, Idles and Panic Shack. Though contemporary post punk is filled with bands inspired by these former groups, this doesn’t result in any ‘boring’ or repetitive feel from the track – instead the energy that gets delivered in the chorus’ is unmatched. One can really only imagine how strong this group must be live – and after seeing they have supported established names such as Pigs x7, TV Priest and Idles it’s no wonder that people say they are destined for great things.
Critically, perhaps the track might benefit from being a bit longer? But again, that’s hypothetical and there’s already a lot of punch and kick packed into 1 minute and 55 seconds, so you’d be forgiven for telling me to shut up for this one.
Overall, this track is great! This is the first time I’ve been exposed to the great work of Grandmas House but it definitely won’t be the last! The new EP will be released 3rd March via Brace Yourself Records. In the meantime, you can go and book tickets for their newly announced headline tour – and I’ll see you there!
