You know I like Gold Baby. Indeed I booked them for an Indie Midlands show at the, now sadly departed, Flapper back in October 2019. Probably the easiest booking I’ve ever done, it was pretty much sorted in the space of one conversation at a gig in Nottingham that Gold Baby were playing at supporting another of my favourite bands Press Club a few weeks earlier.
Now Gold Baby are back with a new single, ‘Captain Dorego’, and an upcoming debut EP, ‘Rabbits’, which is out on March 26th.
‘Captain Dorego’ is taken from the ‘Rabbits’ EP. Here’s what the band have to say about the single:
“‘Captain Dorego’ is a song about indecision and feeling overwhelmed, in a modern world that gives us more choice than ever before. With so many realities that we could or should be living, and more information than ever before being piled into our brains, ‘Captain Dorego’ is about feeling overstimulated and inadequate, about wanting to smash and crush and grind your smartphone and run away into the woods.”
Musically the song is a mournful folky lament on the issues mentioned above. A shimmering and upbeat lead guitar hook dances a melody through the melancholy of the track whilst the tender and beautiful vocal of Siân Alex touches your heart and embraces you. And we all need an embrace in these current times. The lush chorus is awash with crashing cymbals which for a soft and sad moment in the song shouldn’t really work, yet it does perfectly.
Gold Baby are a band that deserve a lot more recognition. Not only are their songs always great but Siân Alex is a really good lyricist. Hopefully with the release of the EP on the horizon 2021 will be a great year for the North London based trio.
