Following single after single, I’ve always been excited to see YNES release new music. Today is an even more exciting day than usual as I’m thrilled to get my ears round YNES’ ‘Born Loser’ EP – her first released body of work!
The EP starts strongly with the most recent single, ‘I Wanna Be Overrated’ – packing a punch with its Kate Nash meets The Ramones anthemic attitude. The first three tracks on the EP have been released as singles – but this does not take away from just how exciting this release is. ‘The Daily Male’ sounds as punchy as ever, demonstrating YNES’ wit and lyrical ability – all while being able to shed a spotlight on a serious issue in society. Perhaps this could actually be the main factor we all know and love about YNES’ records? Her ability to take a topical matter and explore it thoroughly. Her strong lyrical ability should not go unnoticed! ‘Fake What Your Mama Gave Ya’ is one of the best tracks on the EP in my opinion, the guitar work is great on a track that was released back in May as the first single off the EP.
Following the strong run of singles comes the two ‘EP Tracks’. ‘Dizzy’ has this strong melodic sense about it that truly sucks you in as the lyrics explore the whirlwind that is falling in love. Once again, this track reinforces YNES’ ability to be such a good lyricist! Finally, ‘Veneer’ closes out the EP beautifully – here we see YNES take a different approach to songwriting. Instead of coming in all guitars blazing, the track takes a slightly more gentle, retrospective approach to life in the 21st century whilst maintaining the grit of everyday life.
Overall the EP is very strong, jam packed with guitars, melody and sharp lyrics, establishing how strong of an artist YNES is, and I desperately recommend you give ‘Born Loser’ a listen!
